I said "disconnect all cables from the TV and reconnect. Having done that, I then tried the new remote and hey presto it worked"

Of course I should have said "disconnect all cables from the TV and reconnect them back again and turn the TV back on. Having done that, I then tried the new remote and hey presto it worked"
