I don't see any problem with using a thread for this purpose, if that's what other people want to do. If you don't like the idea of rasing money for somebody, don't contribute - and please stay out of this thread. Also, please keep personal squabbles like chant room disagreements out of the conversation.
This thread is about doing something nice for somebody. Let's keep it on that topic.
