I think there are two problems to be addressed here. In Europe, we do not want to have anything to do with the seal hunt.
For the indigenous peoples of Canada, the seal hunt is part of their tradition, but in a modern economy, they need to produce an economic surplus to trade for other things they need. The challenge will be to find something of which they can produce a surplus. It may not need to be a raw material. This is like a lot of moral issues, neither black or white. There is a complex balance of sensibilities to be taken into account, all of which must be respected.
