GUEST says that people who mis-pronounce Reee-O as Rye-o must have got this from print. English speakers habitually pronounce all sorts of foregn names differently from the natives: eg Paris Munich Florence and Venice. Likewise the French call London Londres, etc etc. Nothing odd about that. You can't deduce anything much about printed v oral sources from this.
