G'day Mark,Lepus Rex means "King Hare", although the mediƦval uses of the word often included rabbits. (Incidentally, there is an argument that "puss" comes from a mistaken backformation of lepus as le pus(s). (And there are interesting sub rosa associations between another old English word for rabbit: coney (pronounced 'cunny', to rhyme with 'honey') and later meanings of 'pussy' cf current thread "Mrs Slocum's Pussy".
Alan, of course, offered an apology from our contemporary rabbit king of the cartoons.
