I would recommend that you ignore any inbuilt Microsoft feature and look at this programme - indexyourfiles.
It doesn't install anything on your computer, but runs from a folder without making any changes to your registry, or anything else.
When you run it, it allows you to select which drives to index, then fairly rapidly builds a database of files present. Once that is complete, it can find files by name, date, file type (MP3, .jpg etc), It will also search for text within documents. Once files are listed, there are a range of previews - a music player / text reader / picture viewer built into the programme.
As it works from a database, it only finds files there at the time of indexing, not new ones addes at a later time, but running a new index is so quick it is not a problem.
