"Aug. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Karlheinz Schreiber, a German- Canadian lobbyist and arms dealer, has been handed over to Germany by Canada after ten years of legal battles against his extradition, Deutsche Presseagentur reported, citing Canadian Justice Minister Rob Nicholson.
Schreiber's wife Baerbel confirmed that he was put on a plane in Toronto, the news service said. Schreiber, a central figure in a political scandal over donations to Germany's ruling Christian Democratic Party, is wanted for tax evasion and bribery in Germany, according to DPA.
The lobbyist battled extradition since 1999 and lost a last ruling over the issue over the weekend, DPA said. Schreiber told reporters in Toronto his extradition was politically motivated, because Germany's Social Democrats hope to use it to win votes in the September national elections, the news service reported.
Schreiber's attorney Edward Greenspan didn't immediately reply to a message left to his voice mail after business hours."
