The book is paperback, about 5.5 inches wide by 8.5 inches high. It has a few short articles about Lead Belly by Sonny Terry, Moses Asch, Pete Seeger, Frederic Ramsey, Jr., Charles Smith, Alan Lomax, and Woody Guthrie.

The songs are simply melody lines, guitar chords, and the words to the tunes. No tablature or descriptions of how to play them. Most songs are accompanied by a description from Lead Belly concerning the particular song. It includes about 72 songs. There is a discography and song index that lets you know from what album the song was transcribed.
