Is anyone going to seriously suggest that the extensive and expensive research (which requires a global infrastructure) is going to be paid for by the taxpayer? But the truth is, who else does pay for it, one way or another?

An enormous part of the research and development carried out by drug companies is not aimed at developing new drugs which are more effective in ways that existing drugs are not, but rather at producing drugs that are saleable near-clones of existing drugs.
