Aussie bats carry the lyssia virus, and also recently are suspected to carry the Hendra Virus, the latter has recently been in the news as fatal to humans, but does not seem to affect the bats.

It has also been claimed that Aussie 'bats' (flying foxes) are slightly different to European or US 'bats'. I'm not an expert. Aussie bats seem to prefer fruit.
