CHORUS: It's a mean old dog that won't scratch his mama's fleas. She's got a right to be pleased, And when she's through her scrubbin' and she wants some lovin', Take her up and bounce her on your knees.

Little is known about the composers, possibly African-American, who toured the TOBA vaudeville circuit. With them at one time was Laura Smith, a Black blues singer. Her version of "Don't You Leave Me Here" (Jelly Roll Morton) is perhaps her best known song. Several of her recordings may be heard on redhotjazz.com.
"Them Has Been Blues" by Skidmore and Walker, Laura Smith vocalist, also may be heard there.
