Thread Name: Lyr Req: The Grocer (Ewan MacColl)
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: The Grocer (Ewan MacColl)
Surely Mr Grosvenor Myer with his unquestionable knowledge of folk music must be aware of the political broadside tradition over the ages;a tradition that MacColl was striving to emulate. These squibs were never meant to become classics; the prime objective was to get them into circulation with the undestanding that they would enjoy a short shelf life. Trawl through a number of back editions of MacColl and Seeger's "New City Songster" (where you will find China Rag) to see the number of songs which now appear dated and lacking their original impact but which were most powerful in their time.
Prime Ministers such as MacMillan, Wilson, Heath even Blair have been lampooned and satarised in the folk clubs, and beyond, but if Thatcher suffered more it is not only that she deserved it but she bloody well invited it!
Did you mention unemployment in your list leeneia??
