Thatcher used unemployment as a political weapon whilst allowing her chosen ie. the bankers and city whiz kids to get rich under her philosophy that ' greed is good ' if you had been there at the time Leenia and been unemployed, worried sick all the time about paying the rent and feeding and clothing the kids you wouldn't be so sympathetic towards her.

Listen to MacColls song ' Looking For A Job ' and you might get some idea of the absolute despair of unemployment, it's soul destroying, and Thatcher did it on purpose.
