On Hawaiian shirts, I have seen buttons made of cocoanut shell, mother of pearl, wood, ceramic, brass, and ever-lovely plastic.
In repairing some of my older Hawaiian shirts, this has meant searching the flea markets for buttons that might match when one is missing. The old brass buttons with Kamehameha's profile are very hard to replace.
Friday in Honolulu is the day to go to the legislative building and look at all the various Hawaiian shirts and mumu's that the capitol workers are wearing. Ties, etc. are discouraged on that day.
