I know I spout heresey to admit to being a drummer and never practicing but the effect of playing from the dots was really holding them back.

My difficulty in playing at their speed is my problem - I solved it with difficulty.

They did try to speed-up in the second half, but the pub-goers made them feel unwanted. I am not unconvinced that the two facts are connected. They rested for the summer and looked for another venue. Object lesson duly delivered.

Yes, begginers sessions are needed, but get them to speed-up during the evening and try for your own room in the pub if possible.
