Subject: RE: BS: Pickup trucks (us and ca)
Are we still talking pickup trucks in the 4x4 vs AWD category?

I didn't get 4x4 because I don't need it. I drive on streets, though occasionally bump over curbs to get places that trucks can go that cars can't (yes, I've been known to use the "Texas exit ramp" off the highway across the shoulder and grass to the frontage road when faced with a traffic snarl that shows no relief).

In our rare but not uncommon ice and snow, I go by Home Depot and buy a bunch of 40# bags of top soil, humus, and a few bags of playground sand and I pile them over and behind the rear axle for the few months I might need better traction. I usually run a plank across the back between the wheel wells so the bags stay put. That way I'm more stable in bad weather and come spring I use all of that stuff in the garden. I used to always have snow tires for winter when I lived in Washington State, but you never even hear people mention them down here, and they wouldn't have a clue as to what to do with chains. You just try to stay out of the way with the first big ice of the season and let the locals get it out of their systems.
