Think maybe you're talking about two different thingamabobs: there's screech, the traditional stuff, and there's Screech, the modern stuff with the label that screeches "Screech". That stuff is just another brand of rum. The trad. stuff, if I recall correctly, was soaked out of wooden barrels that had been (mostly) emptied of their rum.
