We have the videos now on the harddrive / DVD recorder and can play them on the TV fine from the harddrive.

What we cannot do is copy them from the hardrive onto recordable DVDs even though it is the same machine.

I think it is because on the harddrive they are still NTSC format and the DVD recorder only works with PAL.
