I have two Dell desktops, one ancient and one merely elderly, and have never had a significant hardware problem with either. Of course, I also haven't tried to upgrade or add hardware. Also have a Mac desktop, which is pretty fool-proof, a near top-of-the line HP laptop that is my son's and has had some problems with hardware, and a toshiba laptop that is a bit slow but has not given me any problems.
