Ithink they tend to be used by those who play jazz or classical as well as folk. They've a smoother sound. The A's deteriorate quickly, the covering comes loose. I didn't realise you could get steel strings for fiddle,(till I looked hard at my cheapie spares), I thought folkies played on gut.
