I think I have sussed the immediate problem.

1. Dell in their wisdom will not permit the drives to be set as master and slave, but demands CS settings on both.
2. The BIOS on Dells as old as the one I am tarting up do not recognise hard disks over 400GB, and the new one was 500. Swapped in a slightly used 350GB - the bitch boots!
