Thread Name: 'Make and Break' or 'One Lunger'? as percussion
Subject: RE: Is This a Make and Break or a One Lunger
A note this morning from my brother in law in Nova Scotia.

Good morning Adrien,

Well mentioning the One Lunger is like looking back into my past.   Dad had an Acadian 1 cylinder, I think it was a 4 horsepower and I got to use it quite often.

It was unique;

1.      it could be submerged in water (due to overnight rains or a boat that leaked and filled half full of water overnight), bail the boat out, dry off the engine connect the batteries and the coil, prime it and turn the crank until it started;

2.      the fuel was gravity fed from a tank usually mounted under the bow cover or in the stern cover;

3.      the batteries were dry cells the size of a large can of beer (4 in series to make 6 volts) and packaged in a wooden box, and were connected to the coil with a switch;

4.      the coil was in a wooden box 4x4x4 cubed with external terminals;

5.      the coil and batteries had to be kept dry so compartment was built beneath the bow cover for storage and if the boat wasn't used on a daily basis then the were removed to the boatshed or taken home (it avoided the boys from going for a midnight sail after frequenting the local bootlegger; and

6.      the motor could run forward or backward; while going forward, turn the switch off , advance the spark; when the motor reached its last revolution; turn the switch on so that it would fire before top dead centre; sending the piston back down and you were going in reverse ( no transmission needed).

Some fellow has one on the other side of the lake and we sometimes hear it when he takes it out for a spin. In this community they were called 'pick-a- puck", (Hea, I hear a pick-a-puck).

Hope you get as much enjoyment out of reading this as I had it typing it and re-living the "make and break years" .

I guess this thread should have been placed below the line as no one has mentioned anything about the tune that was player on You/Tube.
