I suggest that the arrival of the potato and tobacco is popularly linked to Sir Walter Raleigh, not Sir Francis Drake. To the extent that Bob Newhart did a comedy routine as Raleigh's agent, receiving a phone call (..it's nutty Walt again....) about the arrival of tobacco.
