Shakespeare has a relevant quote when it comes to the futility of this kind of thing:

"We have scotched the snake, not killed it.
She'll close and be herself whilst our poor malice
Remains in danger of her former tooth."

Another way of making the same point is Nietzsche's

"That which does not kill us makes us stronger"

Which works equally well as

"That which does not kill them makes them stronger"
