This is a terribly trajic story! My wife and I hiked the Skyline Trail last month. We saw several moose but no coyote. The coyote are not native to Cape Breton and have only appeared in the last three or four decades, but they have multiplied quickly. They have cross bred with timber wolves and large dogs before arriving from farther west and are much larger than their prarie cousins. They also live and hunt in family packs, more like wolves than coyotes. The only previous incident in Nova Scotia of an attack on humans was on the same trail.
Such a sad end to a girl with a big future! Rest in peace!
