Oh, yeah, the soldiers-standing-at-attention thing - when I was a child in West Africa, the school I attended was named for Jean Mermoz, who was kind of the French Lyndburgh/Amelia Earhart, the first to fly hither and yon with this or that cargo, usually the mail I think. Anyway, we had to "faire l'avion" out in the hot tropical sun for end-of-school festivities, which involved standing for hours, it seemed, with your arms on your side-neighbors' shoulders if you were in the wings, and on the shoulders of the kid in front of you if you were in the fuselage.
