Could the older song be 'El Ejercito del Ebro'? In that song, the refrain goes 'Ay Carmela'. But that is a variation of a song from Napoleontic times, it seems, which is indeed called 'Ay Carmela'. And then we could wonder whether there's an even older song before it that actually revolved around Carmela. On the other end, Christy Moore now has added 'Viva la Quinta Brigada'.
