The last week we've had a lot of snow in Juneau, Alaska, but before then rain in bucket amounts saturated everything, setting off mudslides right above downtown.

The largest one took place on the mountainside street above me. Pushed one apartment house off its moorings, totalled three cars and left 3-foot deep mud on the street.

One woman tenant was in her kitchen when the mud pushed through her window. She is still freaked out.

I think mudslides are the scariest- much worse than flooding or snow avalanches. I think it's a pyschological thing- one can picture oneself drowning or suffocating but the idea of mud... Ugh.
