Correction. Summer squash are not really climbers. I meant small melons. I've grown canteloupe up a nylon trellis with good results.   I made slings to support the melons from old stockings.

Fwiw, if your season is not long enough for cantelopes or other melons to reach maturity, young cantelopes (say, lemon-sized) are really tasty - like a sweetish cucumber with a smoother texture.

Don't know how they would do in pots, though.
