Piñons (pine nuts) have always been expensive. Those from the American southwest have better, stronger flavor than those from Asia; the latter are found in stores here, shelled and often slightly 'beyond the best buy date'. (once had the southwest U. S. nuts in stuffing for a turkey; recipe of the late Tex Austin, don't know what was used with them, but it was very good. Wish I knew).
American pecans, almonds both run about $12.00/2 lbs (907g) in stores here (Calgary). The ones from Asia are cheaper, but I don't know what chemicals, etc. were used in growing and packing them.
New Mexico peanuts in the shell, 5 lb/$8.00, in stores here (western Canada). Lots of fat, but I can't resist! Can't get the Georgia or Texas peanuts here except by mail order.
