"Laissez les bons temps roulez." Dave, my wife and I spent most of the weekend at the Valley Court stage. My wife asked the same question about the bass and, though I've never seen one before, it looks like a bigger version of the minimalist electric violins that are on the market these days. So I guess I'd just call it an electric string bass. And, though I have always liked Beau Soleil, I too thought their live presence added much dimension to their music.
