The one thing I had to learn, after many, many years of emotional upheaval, is no matter what you might do to "fix" things for the mentally ill family member, nothing you ever do will be good enough. They have to do it themselves. I finally quit trying and things have actually been better between us. I still have to constantly set boundaries, though; they are always testing.
