Several years ago, I talked to a buddy of mine who is a lawyer. I asked him if he liked working for the federal government. He said he loved it because he didn't have to put up with any bullshit because he could walk away in a snap and never look back... and he laughed heartily. Then, he explained that $$$ were no problem because his wife does well AND she works every long weekend she can. More laughter. He explained further. Here's the deal....

After a 37.5 hour work week, a doc goes on call in emergency at 4PM Friday on a long weekend...

4PM Friday to 12AM Sunday at time and a half... 48 hours regular pay

12AM Sunday to 8AM Tuesday at double time ... 64 hours regular pay

At a rate of $140 (MINIMUM wage for a doc, mind you), that's $15,680. Kick in meals and that's $16k, give or take a few bucks.

I asked if the holiday Monday hours should be at a rate of double time and a half. He nearly fell off chair and said, "Next round is on me!"

Nice work if you can get it.
