Sounds a bit more like a Folk Club, except I guess that everyone takes a turn.

I suppose that'd be easier on the fingers, & I have been to a few evenings like that, but I must admit, I do prefer the session format, cause it means, rather than sitting quiet & just listening for most of the evening, I get to play all night.
