I'm currently re-reading Liza Picard's book "Restoration London" - and what do I see on page 104, but an extract from a London lady's diary for 1650:

The first instant we arrived at the nasty Spaw, we have now began to drinke the horid sulfer water which is as bad as is posisable to be imajaned. (Spelling as given).

Good to know tradition continues down the centuries... :-)
