It was interesting to see Utah Phillips referred to as a Unitarian. I'm guessing that it's something he adopted fairly late in life. I met Utah in 1971 and spent some time with him occasionally over the years and never heard him speak of any religious beliefs. He always called himself an anarchist said an anarchist was anyone "who didn't need a cop to tell him what to do," or who knew to do the right thing because it was the right thing to do. "Cops," he would say, aren't just the police, they're anyone who imposes their view and way of doing things on others. Certainly that includes all organized religion.

The only time I ever heard Utah speak of Unitarians was in a joke about raising money to send a poor Unitarian kid to camp...if you can find one.
