Dare I say that this evocation of the "peasant" is more than a little fanciful. Those people "way back" did not divide themselves into those who made music and those who watched and listened. "Way back", music was something communities did collectively. If you didn't play, you probably sang or danced. It was participative. The disconnect between audience and performer is an outcome of the commodification of music, and largely a feature of the late 20th century and the commercial music industry.
