Just a little in Ray's defence regarding Middleton in Teesdale. Historically the River Tees was the Northern boundary of Yorkshire in the area of Middleton in Teesdale. I think that we in Yorkshire can claim a little of Middleton even though it is to the North of the river, it is very close. Probably some of the lead extracted could have come from the south of the river and could be described as "Yorkshire lead". Must admit all the mines do seem to be to the north of the river, the nearest being Snaisgill.
It is also very likely that some of the miners working there lived in Yorkshire.
Boundaries have been altered regularly and it is possible that Middleton was once in Yorkshire, I have, however found no proof of this, but will continue my efforts to claim Middleton in Teesdale as ours.
