I missed this thread before. In answer to the question posed in the opening post, I've been doing the pie instead of cake thing for birthdays for years. And cheesecakes. The kids of my son's generation just didn't seem to like cake all that much while he was growing up, but they all seemed to love pies and cheesecake.
