Some people steal. They steal things that have value. Habitually.
They steal lead from church roofs. They steal the electrical cables from railway signals and points (despite the obvious danger posed to life and limb of travellers). They steal from their work-colleagues. They steal from traders. They steal from peoples' houses and cars.
Why would this sign be any more sacred to that kind of person?
