I had two Scottish friends at Christ's College, Cambridge, in the early 1950s, named Alistair Anderson-Scott and Jim Gilfellan [the latter also a piper], much in demand at parties to sing this song, which they said they had 'always known from early schooldays' — so as late as that it seems to have remained in oral tradition among young Scots. I don't think they had known one another at school, but had met at the college; but both certainly knew the song. Their chorus was [phonetically, as I recall it] -

Cammer-oo cammer-o cammer-i
Cammer-oo cammer-o cammer-orus
Cammer-oo cammer-o cammer-i —
And that's the Gaelic chorus.

Jim died a few years ago. I have no idea what happened to Alistair.
