Maine is famous for the quick retort. They have gotten me into trouble many times.

One such was the time I went to a gathering at Sinsull's, and at the time I had never met Peter S. He entered the room with a live sea urchin, spines and all, in his hand, held it out to me and said, "This is for the biggest prick in the room." My immediate reply was, "Does your wife tell you everything she knows?"
That should have gotten me killed, but they were both tickled! (She more than he, I think) We have been good friends ever since.
