Buchan is often seen as jingoistic and simplistic, but he was actually a superb writer. For a look at his serious side, I can recommend "Witch Wood" - set in the 17th century - and dealing with the Civil War, the Church and witchcraft in a unique way. The historical setting is incredibly well done.
