Subject: Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion in NJ
On Saturday January 9th at 8:00pm, the Hurdy Gurdy Folk Music Club Concert Series at the Fair Lawn Community Center will present Sarah Lee Guthrie and Johnny Irion and special guest Danielle Miraglia.
The granddaughter of Woody Guthrie and the youngest daughter of folksinger Arlo Guthrie, Sarah Lee was two years old when she made her singing debut as part of a children's chorus on her father's 1981 album, Power of Love. After graduating from high school in 1997, Sarah Lee agreed to tour-manage her father, who was emceeing the Further Festival, on which members of the Grateful Dead were joined by the Black Crowes. The Black Crowes' Chris Robinson would introduce Sarah Lee to her future husband, Johnny Irion.
Johnny Irion came out of the vibrant Carolina indie-rock scene of the early '90s. He started his first band at the age of 15. The alternative rock band was signed by Sony Music's alternative label, and one of their songs appeared in the motion picture Empire Records.
Sarah Lee and Johnny were married in 1999 and began touring as together as a duo in 2000. Their most recent CD "Folksong" was also released as a DVD of a live concert appearance. The title cut is based on unrecorded lyrics by Woody Guthrie that they set to music. Sarah Lee and Johnny also recently released their first children's CD, "Go Waggaloo", on Smithsonian Folkways. The couple's two daughters, plus Sarah's father Arlo Guthrie, and Pete Seeger and Pete's grandson Tao, join together on the recording.
Opening the evening will be Danielle Miraglia. A strong steady thumb on an old Gibson guitar is the driving force behind Danielle Miraglia's delta blues influenced guitar style. With a raw, powerful, whiskey tinged voice she could be labeled a blues artist, but her style pays homage to these blues traditions, her classic rock verve, catchy melodies and eclectic array of song subjects that range from deeply personal to socially relevant give it an original twist that is all her own.
The Fair Lawn Community Center is located at 10-10 20th Street in Fair Lawn, NJ. Tickets for this concert are only $25 (just $22 for Hurdy Gurdy members) and can be purchased online at www.hurdygurdyfolk.org or at the box office at the Fair Lawn Community Center on the night of the concert.
