Additional to what has already been posted, this was in a message (from Joe Kesselman) in rec.music.folk - he was quoting Bruce Taylor:
"...this neck is massive and wide. It is tuned to concert pitch at the third fret, [and] has a shorter scale length than commercially made "long-necks" (which typically are simply today's standard five-string scale extended by three frets). Also, Pete located the fifth string peg one fret closer to the pot than normal which facilitates capoing up to the eighth fret."
