Of course they were. The Taliban was given a chance to turn over Al Qaeda. They were give a chance to work with NATO to remove the treat. Also remember that the Taliban government was overthrown with a vast majority of local forces. The US did do wrong things in that country. They should have finished the jobs before focusing resources on Iraq. They should not have coddled the corrupt government. But they were right in invading with the stated goal of dismantling Al Qaeda.

I do not think that Bush's false bravado and incompetence can be over stated in this matter. Especially in his statements about Bin Ladin.
