The fellow for whom I was working back in 1996 was on standby for ValuJet Flight 592. His ticket was for a later flight, but he'd finished his business and was trying to get home a few hours earlier. Fortunately, the flight was full so wasn't able to get on. If there'd been a no show, he'd have been one of the 110 people who died when it went down in the Everglades six minutes after takeoff.
