My Scots ancestors were Stuarts, for all that's worth in this discussion. I recall going to a grand event many years ago (1950's)where members of The Black Watch touring group sang this song. Done so dramatically, with a male chorus and bagpipes, it was haunting indeed. I speak musically, of course, not politically. It was my first impression of the piece, which I have heard many times since, but never to such lasting effect.
