Jacqui, they are very easy to set up.

Two of the most accessible ones are via Google (Blogger at http://www.blogger.com/home) and I use one from Wordpress. Wordpress is set up with any email, blogger tends to be set up automatically when you set up a gmail account, though you can rename the blog.

I was interrupted when I started writing this, so other answers may have come in since I started. But both of these are easy to use and you can upload photos and such. The free ones have a 10gig limit, but that is a lot of photos if you reduce them to web size before posting them.
