I lived in Kansas when I was growing up...in the 1960s, 3 of the 10 members of the Board of the John Birch Society lived in Wichita. If they could have made Jesus a permanent de jure member of the legislature, they would have jumped at the chance! As it was, every civic organization I knew about had regular prayer meetings and your church affiliation was a major factor in who wanted to associate with you.
